Andrew N. Weintraub is a Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of Pittsburgh where he teaches courses in ethnomusicology, cultural and social theory, popular music, and music of Southeast Asia. Indonesia is a major focus of his research, particularly Sundanese music and theater in West Java, as well as Indonesian national music. Weintraub’s research and writing have made significant contributions to the study of Islam, sound repatriation, cultural rights, and the politics of memory. His work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright Foundation, Ford Foundation, Luce Foundation, and the American Institute of Indonesian Studies (AIFIS), among others. Weintraub’s transdisciplinary approach to music merges ideas, theories, and methods from multiple disciplines and seeks innovative ways to address timely and relevant issues and problems in the humanities and social sciences. Weintraub’s scholarship, teaching, and performance activities are dedicated to creating knowledge, promoting dialogue, building collaboration, and facilitating inter-cultural exchange.
